The Times
Recorded soon after their debut album, Almost Here, the Unbelievable Truth's follow-up only now sees the light of day, thanks to the admirable Oxford indie operation Shifty Disco, which released the band's first efforts in 1997 before Andy Yorke and co succumbed to Virgin's blandishments. That union proved short-lived, however, and Virgin's loss is definitely Shifty Disco's gain, with Yorke sounding more at ease with himself as he steps further out from the long shadow cast by his Radiohead brother, Thom. The essence of the three-piece's increasingly intricate sound is best captured on the ode to insomnia, Home Again, and the equally self-absorbed Daylight: minimalist, sparsely percussed backing over which Yorke intones his maudlin musings. Just the thing for when you feel like someone doing your introspecting for you. DC
